Teekca's Story: Miss Teekca Jade Spence is a young Cree/Ojibway woman residing in Winnipeg with roots in Churchill, MB, and her community of Fox Lake Cree Nation, MB. Teekca is currently a fourth-year student at the University of Manitoba where she hopes to graduate with a BA in Native Studies and minor in Psychology or Business.
For as long as she remembers she spent her summers travelling the pow wow trail with her family, where her entrepreneurial parents set up booths selling Aboriginal crafts. Her upbringing allowed her to be surrounded by creative people and she was encouraged to express herself through drawing, painting, and crafting.
In 2013, Teekca was encouraged to take the Storyboot School workshop at Manitobah Mukluks. She was taught how to bead and create handcraft moccasins and mukluks. Teekca’s mother, Marilyn Tanner-Spence, teaches the course and soon invited Teekca to teach as an instructor. Teekca was able to share her passion of moccasin and mukluk making with others.
Teekca recently started her own small business named ‘OrigiNative Style’. She sells her own handmade jewelry, silk-screened t-shirts and dream catchers. Following in her parents footsteps she sells her products at conferences, political assemblies, on the pow wow trail, and online through her e-commerce store hosted on Etsy.
Teekca is honored that she has been given the opportunity to express her passion and talents by becoming a Storyboot artist.
